Dr. Chen Hongjie joined SMART in 2021 with a PhD from Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore. Using culturing and molecular techniques, he understands fates and occurrences of antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes in various treatment plants, including wastewater reclamation plants. Furthermore, he investigated how different concentrations of various antibiotics, both single and mixed, influence the transfer frequency of plasmids harbouring antibiotic resistance genes.

Over at SMART, he mainly focuses on developing and optimising epicPCR (emulsion, paired isolationand concatenation PCR), to facilitate the identification of bacteria hosts harbouring specific antibiotic resistance genes in the human gut microbial community.
